From Someday to Now

It took a while for Santa to send a Scout Elf to my house. I am a self-proclaimed Scrooge, reticent to celebrate a Holiday for the wrong reasons, resentful of the commercialism of such a sacred time. But last year, Santa sent Clyde Someday to my house, a friend to my daughter and a kindle to ignite the flame of this season in my heart.

Esmé had Sparkles show up at her dad's house for a couple years already. Sparkles has the same brown hair and blue eyes, so there was an immediate recognition and connection. Sparkles is a bit mischievous, so I was nervous about welcoming an Elf into my home, characterized by cleanliness and order.

Clyde Someday showed up December 1st, 2024, we found him sat upon an inflatable cactus that sits next to the hearth. He was different from Sparkles though, he was soft plushy, not hard plastic.

It turns out, for those unfamiliar with Scout Elf lore, that there are Old World Elves and New World Elves. Santa opted to send an Old World Elf to my house. Clyde Someday was calm and charming, not wild and messy. Clyde Someday also bore the same resemblance to Esmé with the brown hair and blue eyes, but he showed a zest for the Old Ways - intuition and mystique.

Sparkles showed up at Esmé's dad's house a few days before Thanksgiving, being summoned by the hanging of her stocking (a young girl's impatience certainly played a role!). Thoughts quickly turned to Clyde Someday - when would he grace us with his presence? The stocking summons worked well to call in Sparkles, so Esmé suggested we hang a stocking for Clyde Someday. We had three small stockings to choose from, but she wanted Clyde Someday to pick his own. She set the three stockings out for him with a note asking him to pick his favorite.

Hearing a noise in the middle of the night, Esmé got up and found an Elf sat on the chair wearing all three stockings - one on each foot and the third upon his head! I slept through the night unaware of our visitor from the North. Come morning, a sleepy Esmé tells me Clyde was here...but he looks different. And he was different! Was he still Clyde Someday..? Or a new Elf entirely? We were unsure.

Considering I speak to Spirit, I figured I would pull some cards and ask Santa directly what was going on with our Elf. First we asked if this was a new Elf, and the answer was NO (7Wands,Rev). The next question - Did Clyde Someday transform? - came back with a YES (5Swords). How/why did Clyde Someday transform? brought out the (9Swords,Rev); he ROSE from the Old World to the New World. Clyde Someday....is now simply Clyde. He is still him, but he has risen from the ashes of his past and bloomed as he is now in the present.

Christmas is a time to withdraw, in order to be reborn into the next cycle. Clyde Someday's transition to Clyde reminds us that every cycle brings with it a new beginning, a transformation of the past into the future through the present. The rose will bloom again, and again, and again.

Blessed be.
